That's so gay - not okay!

Something annoyed me Thursday morning. Anyone who knows me would not think this an uncommon occurrence, but this made me angry.  I was listening to Nova937’s Nathan & Nat with Shaun McManus as they were discussing the over-dramatisation of the third season of my favourite reality show So You Think You Can Dance Australia.

I wasn’t getting defensive – in fact, I’m inclined to agree with their point of view. I’ve cried three times this week and I haven’t even broken a nail.

But before throwing it over to the listeners to hear what they thought, Shaun McManus said he had banned it from being watched in his house, calling it the “gayest show” on TV. NOTE: I could be paraphrasing – I tried to make a note of the exact words but was stuck on the freeway manipulating a merge with a typical Chinese driver and a sudden swerve made me drop my iPhone.

Shaun, Nathan and Nat from Nova

As if picking on SYTYCD isn’t sacrilegious enough – the show IS the homosexual experience on TV. Dancing has never been the cool thing to do; the cool group hang out on the school oval, not in front of a wall of mirrors wearing a unitard and knee-highs. As gay people we all know what it’s like to feel that what we do isn’t cool, and how emotional an experience it can be to rise above that.

So in that respect, SYTYCD is a pretty gay show, but I’m sure that analogy was not what Shaun McManus had in mind Thursday morning.

Most people wouldn’t see Mr McManus’s comment as a big deal. The phrase “that’s so gay” has made it into the Australian vernacular. It’s been bandied around in our schools for years, and now it’s making its way into our workplaces and our radios! But any readers who balked at me using the intentionally racist phrase “typical Chinese driver” will hopefully understand that the term “that’s so gay” vilifies homosexuals in the same way that phrase vilifies the Chinese.

It is about time we realise that a statement like “that’s so gay” vilifies same-sex oriented people throughout the country. Every time a young boy or girl who is questioning their sexuality hears such statements, it takes them further away from accepting themselves. We’ve all been there!

As Australians, we don’t accept racial vilification, so why is it OK for us to degrade homosexuality with this flippant insult? I am not accusing Shaun McManus or Nova937 of vilification. When I complained to Nova937’s Managing Director Gary Roberts, he raised a valid point that Shaun’s comment was not in the same league as John Laws’ comments in 2004, which were found to vilify homosexuals by the NSW Administrative Decisions Tribunal. I am sure McManus did not intend to vilify anyone, least of all his colleague Nathan Morris. But, as with sexual harassment, intent is irrelevant. The point is that someone was offended by his comment, and I am sure I am not the only one.

After complaining to Gary Roberts and not being satisfied that I was being heard, I went into attack mode. I created the slogan THAT’S SO GAY? NO WAY! and was emailing a friend to create a logo when I discovered that the proposed domain name for my anarchic website was already taken. www.thatssogay.com.au is a website and foundation created by Daniel Witthaus. Daniel tours Australian schools, holding seminars and workshops and selling his book, Beyond ‘That’s So Gay’: Challenging Homophobia in Secondary Schools. I was excited and empowered to find that I’m not alone in being fed up with the overuse of this offensive term.

But while I think it is important to discuss this phenomenon in our schools, I also think it’s about time we discussed it in the workplace and the adult sphere. Just like the terms “gook”,” nigger”, “boong” and “wog” I hope that one day the term “that’s so gay” is one that we mutter under our breaths in fear that we’ll be heard by a society that (at least on paper) rejects such vilification, rather than being thrown around on Perth radio by former footballers who should know better.

For those playing at home, In August 2007 Laws was again embroiled in controversy after suggesting on-air that "Chinese drivers are probably the worst drivers on the face of the earth." I hope my intentional irony was more accessible than Laws’s claims that he is not racist.

What on earth are you doing listening to these f*#kwits Kieran!?! I know you have a bit of time on your hands and the tennis is over...

If it was a pollie or a police officer or a judge saying this stuff I'd demand some action but when it's these pathetic talentless D grade neanderthals I really think starving them of oxygen (preferably literally) is the best approach. Writing about anything they say, even a well crafted attack such as yours, lends them some credibility.

Interesting. I did catch on to the typical chinese driver comment you made and was all ready to post a comment accusing you off hypocrisy before I got through the rest of your article.

I don't think most people intend to insult when they use the term 'that's so gay' I think it just comes about out of habit and because one's peers or social circle uses the term also so it's acceptable. That doesn't mean I would encourage the use of the term and I wouldn't use the term myself unless I was being ironic (being gay myself).

People probably just need to be educated and veer away from using the term - just because everyone else uses it doesn't make it acceptable. It's a habit that needs to be unlearnt, but then good luck trying to change that in a school yard!
  • Mulder  - My nigger homies
Only homosexuals should be allowed to call stuff gay :) Black rappers sing about their nigger homies with no probs right? (unless you're Eminem).

Seriously though, awareness of this issue is below what is acceptable. Alarm bells should ring when someone says "that's so gay". It internalises homophobia. It sends out the wrong message. There's a "Do you realise what you say?" campaign in the USA about this very same thing. Check it out:

The original definition of "gay" had nothing to do with homosexuality. Someone recently hijacked it to describe poofters and faggots because it's a little bit nicer and more PC. Yes, I'm a proud poofter/faggot with appropriate context.

So the world has turned and language has changed with it. A new generation is developing their own vernacular. Great! Build a bridge and get over it instead of making a huge issue about some bizarre right of ownership on three letters of the alphabet.

I have a teenager and I have no issue with her friends using that word in its new context - for the vast majority of them it has nothing to do with homosexuality and is as far from vilification as Pluto is from being a planet (because it might have been once, but it isn't anymore)!

    Excellent reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay
  • Dard  - Madonna
I may be getting off the subject just a tad right now but I remember when Madonna made her 'comeback' after having her second child, I was in the gym, radio blaring something or other, may have been Nova, irrelevant as was still being broadcasted and went something like this....Madonna, have you seen the legs on her, she looks like a Man, ha ha ha ha ha ha. I found THIS to be very offensive as if there is one WOMAN on the planet who is role model for young WOMAN it has to be Madonna. I still flinch at what I heard over the airwaves that day. Just think....Kyle Sandilands (or whoever he thought he was...psuedo celebs in radio land
  • Jane
I listen to Nova in the morning and find it ironic you are questioning their 'gay friendliness' as the main host Nathan is gay.

Mark you seem to feel very strongly about these folks, can I ask why? They seem like a nice enough bunch.

I do agree with Mulder sometimes we do not realise the power of our words, but in this case I think Kieren is over reacting a little.
  • Brad
I agree with Mark. Nova is SO gay! Why do you listen to it?
  • Jane
    Hey Brad
I like them and of all the other commercial offerings I think they bring something different to the table. I really like Triple J but Nova is pretty good too. What do you listen to?
  • Mark
Jane - Its not just that I don't like nova, I truly despise everything they stand for. It's not the generally crap music so much, or the naive, I'll- informed, hosts who think something is funny if you shout it and then scream and giggle like a demented nutter, or the offensive childish pranks they play or the endless ads. It's that all of these things add up to so much less than the sum of their parts. And that these people acquire an unjustified status that allows them to comment in an I'll-informed way, in tiny sound bites, about important issues and ultimately contribute to community misunderstanding. Bugger, now I've contradicted my earlier point somewhat...

Oh and on the point that Nathan is gay - some of the most homophobic people out there are gay!
  • Andrew Vinciullo
I'd love to know what Alan Jones has to say on the topic...
  • Micha Weiss  - Marginalisation
Kieran, I agree with you that we need to address this expression "it's so gay." And the notion that being queer gives licence to use such denogrative language, or as Collin Mullane seems to suggest, the freedom to authorise others to use it, is absurd. Whatever Nathan's sexuality, it is socially irresponsible to use any language that allows for the equation to be drawn that gay=bad, less than, undesirable, poorly designed, rubbish, superfluous, irrelevant et cetera.

I also agree with your drawing a parallel between a nationality and sexuality, and indeed for that matter, between body type, health or age and sexuality. Imagine how long "That's so black/fat" would last with equal opportunity grabbing broadcasters by the nuts and squeezing tight...

As for ironic use: The irony is that many of the greatest designers, composers, dancers, writers, philosophers, teachers, artists (you see my point) are and have always been gay men, with one or two lesbians given recognition along the way :-( The other irony here is that WE disempowered straight bigots with our assumption of the word gay after it had been used to name us and subsequently to segregate and marginalise us. We took the word, as we later did with "queer," and used it positively. Now bigots are trying to reassert the negative connotations that exclude us from what is good, successful and desirable.

It is only through legislation (equal ops covers this nationally) and education that the expression will lose momentum, so long as queer folk remain apathetic or use it themselves while claiming it to be used with no etymological relevance to sexual minorities being cut down and demonised. Producers and station managers and for that matter, publishers and directors all try to claim that the expression of ignorant bigotry is somehow less offensive/harmful/hateful than that terminology applied by some extraordinarily right wing facist bastard, but they're wrong. The encouragement that the dead-heads in the school graounds hear to beat up on other kids is in that language, and the gay kids that self-harm, suicide, fail to develop strong socialisation skills/relationships, fail to understand their social relevance and potential pay the real price.

Finally, I am so sick of hearing people make excuses for their stupidity and ignorance, with an "I'm okay Jack" attitude that in its own right reduces the validity of others. This is really something that is ugly and causes unnecessary fraying where there ought to be cohesion. Inclusion is how we will all benefit, not exclusion. Good for you, Kieran, for raising this ongoing problem.
  • Brad
I agree with you, Micha. But I think the real issue is why Keiran is listening to Nova; let's not lose sight of what's important in this blog. Which leads me to Jane's 'queery' of what I listen to. Jane obviously understands that this is the important thread of this blog! Well, truth be told, my comment was tongue in cheek and really not a commentary on taste. But as you have asked, I listen to the gayest of them all: Sunshine FM. Now that is so gay!
  • Kieran Bycroft
Colin, your argument troubles me, but not quite as much as describing wikipedia as an "excellent" reference....

Of course language and culture change over time - but explain to me how your teenager using the word gay to describe something he or she doesn't like isn't offensive.

This use isn't giving the word a new meaning - it is associating new meanings to an existing understanding of the word.

You say you're a proud faggot/poofter. Like Micha says, as a culture we've taken these words (gay/queer) and made them positive.

When will we stop having to make things positive? Why can't being gay just BE positive for not only us, but for the broader community?

And as for Mark and Brad, your arguments toward Nova only prove you clearly don't listen to the station. I think you're talking about 92.9...
  • George Henry
Simply put, the phrase makes my skin crawl each and every time I hear it.

There are more of our youth killing themselves every bloody year because they are ashamed/scared/whatever of their homosexual feelings so to support the use of "that's so gay" is completely abhorrent!!!

The phrase helps build up a feeling of self loathing by those who hear it over and over from their peers.

Perhaps there is a need to pursue a case under the homosexual vilification laws with Nova. What Narrow-Minded-McManus said on air IS homosexual vilification and it is NOT OK. Not now, not ever!

    Over to you GALE.....
